Precisely at 9:00am every Sunday morning, you will see two familiar faces coming through the front doors of the church. Chuck and Carrie Hoffman are faithful in their weekly church attendance as well as being faithful in their years of ministry at CLC.
Although Carrie was born in Landisburg, at the age of five she became a Duncannon girl who was raised on a farm outside of town. Chuck was a Marysville guy. They met while attending Susquenita High School where they were in the same grade.
Carrie attended CLC and was confirmed here, while Chuck attended the Church of God in Marysville.
Following graduation from Susquenita, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Carrie was employed by Dauphin Deposit Bank and later at Eileen Hope Dress Factory. After Chuck was discharged from the Navy, they married at CLC in 1959 and recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on October 21. Coincidentally, Carrie and Chuck both shared the last name of Hoffman, so Carrie never had to change her name after marriage!
They went to housekeeping in Bill and Gladys Burley’s little house along Route 11/15 before purchasing their house on Gamber’s Corner Road, which has been home for many years.
Chuck went to work for Food Fair and Carrie left the dress factory to have their sons. In 1964, Charles Jr. was born, followed by their second son, Jody in 1969. After 30 years at Food Fair, Chuck then went to work for Maguire’s Ford and retired from there. In the meantime, Carrie became employed at Susquenita Elementary School where she worked in the cafeteria for 20 years before retiring. In addition to working outside the home, they also put in a very large garden every year and spent many hours planting, harvesting,
canning and freezing their harvest. The garden is now scaled down and they have more time to enjoy going to yard sales. However, Chuck says their days of having a yard sale are done. It’s a lot of work!
Chuck has served on the church council multiple times, was a member of the choir, and taught catechism for many years. He also serves as a church usher. Carrie served in the church nursery and taught Sunday school in the primary department.
They have 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
